Log Peel

in 2022 Nicholas Volpe attended Hooke Park, the rural campus of the Architectural Association in England, to study advanced fabrication and experimental architecture. Within this space he learned some skills in KUKA Robotics and was able to program through the use of Grasshopper a process by which a Western Red Cedar log is peeled with a bandsaw. What is unique in this situation is the requirement that the lathe, and the KUKA arm act ins tandem to turn the log, and incrementally move the bandsaw in sync. The result was a spirla cut log that could be quartered into arched cedar shingles and the pieces were designed into an undulating array.
